Halsted was forced to have sex with his stepfather when he was eight years old. "At that age, I didn't know what rape was," he said later. "I didn't know what had happened to me. I wasn't repulsed, but I couldn't accept it ... My interest in sadism, my fascination, had its roots in that early incident."
