Leonard Matlovich

Leonard Matlovich (b. 1943), gay rights activist and former Air Force sergeant

He became famous in 1975, and appeared on the cover of Time magazine, when he set himself up as a test case to challenge the US military's policy of automatically discharging homosexuals. Although he knew he was gay at the age of twelve, he was celibate until he was thirty, when he finally got up the nerve to go to a gay bar in Pensacola, Florida. He lost his virginity to a government civil servant.
