Liberace

In 1959, Liberace sued the London Daily Mirror and one of its journalists for libel, for implying that he was a homosexual. On the witness stand, Liberace flatly denied that he was a homosexual and stated that he had never in his life indulged in homosexual practices. The trial lasted only six days, and Liberace won the suit and a $24,000 settlement. In 1982, Liberace himself became the defendant in a highly publicized lawsuit, which once again called his sexual preference into question. The suit was filed by his former chauffeur and bodyguard, 23-year-old Scott Thorson, who sought $113 million in "palimony" after claiming that he and Liberace had had 'an intimate sexual and emotional relationship" for more than six years. Liberace again denied he was gay, and issued a statement asserting that Thorson's suit was "an outrageous, ambitious attempt to assassinate my character." Liberace eventually paid Thorson a $95,000 out-of-court settlement. After Liberace died in 1987, it was revealed that he had AIDS. His homosexuality - an open secret within the entertainment industry - became widely known. Also, shortly after the entertainer's death, the London Daily Mirror asked for a refund of the $24,000 libel settlement it had paid him back in 1959.
