Philip Hitchcock

Award winning, controversial, prolific and profound.

A multi-faceted artist and sculptor proficient in a variety of techniques, Philip Hitchcock is known best for his innovative and highly unique castings taken from life. OUT Magazine has named him among the "OUT 100" for 2001, an annual designation honoring 100 gay men and women in America who have distinguished themselves in their fields.

The work has been called an allegory of the AIDS epidemic. Says the artist, "My work represents the heroism of human struggle against the ravages of physical decay. The strange beauty of fragmentation, brokenness, and suffering depicted in my sculptural forms serve to emphasize the spiritual struggle and resilience of human identity. I capture realism in my work, but heighten and magnify it by adding layers and startling embellishments. Bridging high photo realism and high fantasy art, the work is metaphorical for the human condition in modern society at the threshold of the 21st century; a core of realism surrounded by the more unnerving images we wish the world to notice and judge."

Based in Venice, California, but with an international clientele, Hitchcock's work can be found in private collections, and gracing corporate environments around the world. His images are seen daily on
television, in films, and advertising. The most recent addition to Hitchcock's design universe is a book of his work: Dark Impressions:
The Art of Philip Hitchcock (Ellis Publications, 10/2000;$40).
Beautifully photographed by the artist, it represents a range of his erotic lifecast imagery and light sculptures in nearly 100 pictures. It also features a "how to" sequence, written by Hitchcock.
